Does your home feel cold this winter? Are you shivering under a pile of blankets? And are you longing for the warmth of the long hot summer days? Whilst you cannot control the temperature outside, there are many things you can do to keep your cold house warm. Read on for our top, handy tips!

1. Curtains

Make full use of the sun when it shines and keep your curtains open. However, as soon as the sun goes down, draw them to keep that heat in. If possible, opt for thermal lined curtains, and make sure they fully cover the width and drop of your windows.

2. Windows and Doors

If you always feel a cold draught around your ankles, check your window and door seals are free from cracks and gaps. If your windows and doors do not fit properly, it might be a good time to consider replacing them with new energy-efficient ones. Energy-efficient replacement windows and doors are available in a range of styles and materials, and all are extremely efficient at keeping your home warm. Our friendly staff at Doors and Windows (Exeter) are always available to arrange a free no-obligation quote. Give us a call!

3. Get the tinfoil out

If your home is cold, don’t lose any heat that you might have to your walls. Wrap a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators. If you are feeling creative, cut the card to a T-shape, so it can balance on your radiator brackets!

4. Central heating

Banish the chill from your home, by making sure your central heating system is working as efficiently as possible. Check your radiators – are they cold at the top? If so, they probably need bleeding.

Don’t forget to regularly maintain your boiler too. Regular servicing will prolong your boiler’s life! Additionally, it will keep your home safe by minimising the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

5. Lag your pipes

Lagging your pipes will keep the water inside your pipes, hotter for longer. Lagging is readily available from DIY stores and can be fitted in seconds. Any left-over lagging can be used as a temporary door draught excluder until you get replacement doors!

6. Temperature control

When the temperatures are plummeting outside, resist the urge to turn up the thermostat to a tropical temperature. Instead, put on an extra layer of clothing. Wearing an extra layer can make it feel up to 3 degrees warmer!

7. Toasty toes

socks

Don’t neglect your feet! Feet can struggle to keep warm in colder temperatures, so keep your toes warm, by wearing slippers or a very thick pair of socks. If you have wooden flooring or tiles, consider putting down a warm rug. This can easily be rolled up and stored away once the warmer weather returns.

8. Oven ready

A really simple way to add extra warmth is to keep your oven door open! After you have cooked your hearty meal, keep the door open, and leave the heat to flow into your kitchen. Don’t forget to make sure any small children and boisterous animals are closely supervised!
