                              Common Misconceptions

There are a few popular misconceptions regarding the replacement of windows and doors. This page aims to highlight those to you and make you aware of the requirements, regardless of whos products you choose.

MYTH: Windows and doors are maintenance free......

Not true!    New windows and doors have locks, handles, hinges etc ie: moving parts. These need only to be lubricated regularly and they will outlast their guarantee for years. Consider buying a car - would you never top up the oil or have it serviced? Doors & Windows (Exeter) Limited recomend the use of silicone spray once every 6 months to ensure the items continue to operate smoothly. This can be purchased from us or a hardware store.

MYTH: PVCu will discolour over time

Not true!    The profile companies (plastic manufacturers) spend millions of pounds every year developing their products. They only use virgin polymers to manufacture the frames for windows and doors, and they are tested to the limit for strength and durability. Since taking on the Eurocell range, we have never had a product discolour, and are confident we never will. Regular cleaning of the framing, both inside and out will help to ensure they last not only until their 10 Year guarantee, but for many many years after.

MYTH: Replacing my windows and doors will eradicate condensation

Not true!    Replacing your windows and doors for more thermally efficient products will certainly help to reduce any problems you may face with condensation, however, condensation is a build up of moisture in the air, which new windows and doors cannot remove. Bedroom windows are a common location for condensation build up - not suprising really when you consider a human can produce over a litre of moisture in a nights' sleep!!! The best way to keep air circulating is to have background ventilation fitted. This will reintroduce fresh air into the room and prevent the build up of stagnent air. One method of achieving this would be to fit Trickle Vents to the windows. (This can actually be carried out to existing windows quite easily)

MYTH: All Double-Glazing companies use hard sell tactics

Not true!    Most industries have an element that use hard sell tactics, and the Double-Glazing industry is no different. Most people will have heard nightmare stories about salesmen (or women) spending hours in someone's home showing videos, ringing managers for discounts, and generally applying whatever method they can to push you into a sale........ We're not all like that!
Doors & Windows (Exeter) Limited do not employ sales staff. During your consultation period with one of our owners, we will simply offer advice taken from many years within the industry. We have the advantage of seeing all sides of our business, and are knowledgeable in all areas of our products and their installation. We will offer advice as to design where an issue with Building Regulations might occur, but other than that - we don't talk finance or push you to sign on the dotted line. You are sent a quotation in the post detailing what has been discussed, and are left in peace to decide if it's right for you - we NEVER chase up our quotations. If you have a question, we invite you to contact us on your terms, and discuss it with the person you saw.
We believe that you should be treated as you would like to be treated yourself. And we have many customers who would be happy to speak to you to confirm that we do what we say. See our Testimonials page.
